How to use this Google Docs invoice template
- Download the DOCX template below. Sign in to your own Google account and open Google Drive.
- Upload the file to Drive, then open it with Google Docs. Office files can be edited directly; uploading does not automatically make a native Google document.
- If you want a native Google document, choose File → Save as Google Docs. Fill in the bracketed fields and check the amounts yourself.
- Keep an untouched master and make a copy for each invoice. Download the finished document as a PDF and review it before sending.
When Google Docs is a good fit
Google Docs suits invoices you want to edit across devices or review with a collaborator. Be careful with sharing permissions: invoices can contain private business and payment details. For automatic totals, choose Google Sheets instead.
Make it a complete invoice
Include a unique invoice number, issue date and payment due date. Identify your business and client, describe each item clearly, and show quantities, rates, currency, any applicable tax and the total due.
Add payment instructions that your client can follow. Replace every bracketed placeholder with your information, remove the instruction rows in the Excel workbook before sending, review the actual file you will send, and keep a copy. Our invoice guide covers numbering, saving and sending in more detail.
For help with imports, see Google's instructions for working with Office files in Google Drive.
Questions about Google Docs invoices
Where can I find an invoice template in Google Docs?
You can start with the downloadable DOCX on this page and open it in Google Docs. It is not necessary to locate a particular template in the built-in gallery.
Does it calculate the invoice total automatically?
No. This is a document template, so check the arithmetic yourself. Use the Google Sheets template or online editor if you want calculated totals.
Will the formatting stay the same?
Document apps can handle fonts and spacing differently. Check the table, page breaks and final PDF after import, especially if you add long addresses or item descriptions.
